How Many Shockwave Therapy Sessions Will I Need?

There's no universal number. Your plan should depend on your diagnosis and response, with clear review points before any extra sessions are added.
Short answer: it depends on the condition, how long you've had it, how many areas are involved, and how you respond. Plans you read about online vary because they describe different conditions and protocols. Your plan should come in writing with review points built in.
Your Initial Treatment Plan
After your evaluation, your clinician should explain the proposed number of sessions, how often they occur, and why. Our 4-visit and 8-visit packages exist because many plans fall in that range, but the recommendation is individual.
Response Measures
Agree on what you'll track — pain scores, walking tolerance, strength, or sleep. Research protocols use similar measures; see examples on PubMed.
Reassessment Before Extension
More sessions should follow a review, not happen automatically. If progress has stalled, the next step might be changing rehab, re-examining the diagnosis, or referral.
Options When Progress Stalls
Alternatives such as targeted physical therapy, footwear changes, injections, or specialist opinions may fit better. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons describes stepwise care for common conditions like plantar fasciitis, and the Mayo Clinic outlines options for tendinitis.
