What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy — sometimes called extracorporeal pulse activation technology (EPAT) — is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured tissue. It's been used clinically for more than two decades and is now widely adopted by elite sports teams, military medical centers and orthopedic clinics.
How does it work?
A handheld applicator delivers gentle acoustic pulses through the skin into the affected area. These pulses produce mechanical and biological effects that:
- Increase local blood flow and oxygen delivery
- Recruit and activate the body's resident stem cells
- Reduce inflammation and break down scar tissue
- Stimulate the formation of new, healthy tissue
What does a session feel like?
Most patients describe the sensation as a series of light taps. Sessions typically last 10–15 minutes, require no anesthesia, and have no downtime — you can return to work, exercise and daily life immediately after.
How many sessions will I need?
Treatment plans are individualized, but most patients see meaningful improvement in 3–6 sessions. Dr. O'Neill will build a plan tailored to your condition and goals.
